Self Care Tips for Managing Stress and Anxiety

    Employee Wellbeing,
    Mental Health

As the week draws to a close, lets focus on what we can do to promote positive mental health and wellbeing.

We’ve talked first steps and how to access help, but what can you do to actually help lift your mood and make positive changes towards happiness?

  • Go for a run, disperse the cortisol (stress hormone that will be running riot in your body if you are stressed out)
  • Get out in nature, being around trees and natural surroundings helps you feel grounded and is a great theme to have picked for this mental health awareness week
  • Every day, even if you don’t feel like it, get out for a walk to get a change of scenery
  • Journal your feelings, doesn’t have to be neat or pretty, just let the pen flow with your thoughts and feelings
  • Arrange to see a friend or family member who you can have a good natter and giggle with to remember some happy memories
  • Start a new project, it can be very therapeutic to start a project that you work on continually and watch develop along the way.  Once finished, it will feel great to have achieved something and look back at how far you have come since you began
  • Practice meditation.  Sit quietly for even 10 minutes, calming your breathing, and being in the moment to let your thoughts settle is enough to gather yourself again
  • Explore holistic therapies – there are a number of different therapies that can help with anxiety and stress reduction.  I have personally found Reiki, a form of energy healing to be particularly beneficial
  • Try yoga!  If you haven’t, then you should.  There are so many benefits of using yoga to unwind, release held tension and being in the present moment rather than ruminating on your worries
  • Schedule in time for yourself each and every day.  There is time, even if its 30 minutes.  Take yourself off to read your book, spend time on your project, whatever you enjoy doing.  This is more important than ever just now.
  • Spend time with your beloved pet.  Animals love unconditionally and being in their presence is instantly calming
  • Have a digital detox, make sure you spend some time away from your phone, in particular social media and engage in real life activities

Have a restful weekend folks!  Enjoy some ‘me’ time.
