Stand out in a crowded market

Stand out in a crowded market

 3 Feb 2021

There is no doubt competition is fiercer than ever when it comes to job searching.  I am hearing more and more about how there seems to be a need to meet all of the essential criteria and some of the desirables when rewind a year, in the skill short market, compromises were met and if you had say 80% of the essential criteria, then that was good enough.

I have also been hearing a lot of how the salaries are being driven down further as employers are back in the driving seat which is sad to see.

So what can you do to make yourself visible?

My top tips are;

  • Before applying to any role, decide whether you meet the essential criteria.  Only apply if you meet ALL of the criteria
  • When you’ve read all the requirements and feel you are a good fit, go through your CV and make sure highlighted within is your relevant experience to the position
  • Tailor your CV to the role you are applying for.  Making sure you are including the relevant experience and give more detail, in particular on company size, type of business, working environment i.e ‘being in a busy fast paced team where no two days were the same’ or ‘processing high volumes of invoices per week’ or what system it was that you implemented to give a flavour of the synergy between yourself and the new position
  • Ensure you have an attention grabbing introductory profile highlighting your key ‘selling’ points
  • If the role is advertised through a recruiter, give them a ring to introduce yourself.  Building a rapport with the recruiter will help your name stand out in the shortlisting process
  • Keep in touch with your favourite recruiters so you are on their radar the moment that perfect vacancy becomes available
  • Most importantly, keep the faith!  The market is showing signs of picking up, albeit slowly and when it does, there will be more roles to go round and less competition.

The right role for you will present at the right time so don’t be disheartened if you weren’t selected – for whatever reason it wasn’t meant to be.

Happy job hunting and keep smiling.  The madness will end soon.
